You do not need a Social Security Number to build a great credit score. Learn how to use your ITIN.
Introduction
Building credit in the United States without a Social Security Number (SSN) might seem impossible, but it is entirely doable using an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).
Step 1: Apply for an ITIN
First, you need to apply for an ITIN through the IRS using Form W-7. This number allows you to pay taxes and open bank accounts.
Step 2: Get a Secured Credit Card
Many major banks, like Bank of America and Capital One, offer secured credit cards to ITIN holders. You place a deposit, which becomes your credit limit.
Step 3: Pay on Time
The most important factor in your credit score is your payment history. Always pay your balance in full and on time every month.
